On Sunday July 13th more than 10,000 people gathered at Walmer Green on the 20th Anniversary to remember the bandsmen killed in the IRA bombing of the Royal Marines School of Music on 22nd September 1989.
The band of HM Royal Marines Portsmouth played an array of compositions commencing at 2PM.
Then the band of HM Collinwood formed at the Betteshanger Rugby Club the former drill field of the Deal barracks to March through the town to the bandstand, and what a stirring sight it was.
Thousands lined the streets as the band held a minutes silence before marching onto the green. The Last Post was sounded and after another minutes silence the names of the eleven murdered musicians were read out.
The concert and Rededication Service ended around 4.30PM with the Royal Marines Bands playing “A Life on the Ocean Wave ".
There are 26 concerts a year on the bandstand and on 12th July the Bandstand Trust received a cheque for £10,000 from Royal Marines who did a sponsored bicycle ride from Deal to Cornwall between Monday May 18th and Friday May 22nd.
A number of severely injured Heroes from the Defence Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court in Surrey were guests of honor along with a contingent of Chelsea pensioners.
A tribute was made to former Commandant General of the Royal Marines, Sir Martin Garrod, who died in April. He was a huge Champion of the bandstand
